Tapantí
covers 6080 hectares (15,017 acres) and is located in the Orosi district
in Paraiso of the province of Cartago. The Rio Macho Forest Reserve
mostly surrounds it. Within
Tapantí one encounters two different life zones: low mountain rain
forest, and pre-mountain rain forest. This park is notable for being one
of the rainiest areas of Costa Rica. The Grande de Orosi River into which
many smaller rivers bisect the area and creeks empty their waters. This
vital liquid is used to generate hydroelectric power and to supply a
great part of the population of San Jose metropolitan area by means of
the Orosi aqueduct. The park is home to 260 species of birds, 45 species
of mammals, 28 species of reptiles and a large characteristic
