The central Pacific is Costa Rica's perfectionist poster child; snapshots of sunsets over its rocky coastline grace the covers of travel brochures, people-sized marlin and snapper lure sportfishermen from all over the world, rugged rain forests sprawl just meters from soft sandy beaches, and the surf breaks high and low for waveriders of all abilities. The area sees tons of traffic in just a few spots, but the visitors vary from vacationing tico families and foreign backpackers to resort-hopping honeymooners, all of whose every whim and tropical fantasy is satisfied by the well-developed tourist infrastructure and convenient public transportation. Popularity, however, comes at an unavoidable price; the major beach towns of Jacó, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio are invariably more crowded and a bit pricier than Costa Rica's more remote Caribbean side. Diehard peace-seekers, however, need only move on to less-visited Playa Hermosa, Playa Esterillos Oeste, or Dominical for more remote, unspoiled scenery and long stretches of empty beach. Dry or wet season, the central Pacific delivers---be prepared to be pampered. |
